Chapter 7

Despite the hour I had gotten home the night before, I was up early in the morning. I had a small drink to blow the sleep out of my brain, then put on a pot of coffee and made some eggs and toast. Later, I had my coffee in the living room, even though the decor kept reminding me of Lita Harper. After that, I showered, shaved, and got dressed. I strapped on my gun, shrugged into my coat, and went outside.

I went over the Cadillac carefully. My guess was right. They had installed a new beep box, this time under the hood. I’d thought that they might have found the one I’d. thrown out the evening before and, thinking it had fallen off, would try again.

I removed the box, which was fastened to the hood with a magnet, and looked around. Parked next to me was a bright red Porsche. There was no one in sight and the draperies on all the front apartments were still drawn. I walked over to the Porsche and quickly fixed the box beneath it. That would give them something to follow.

Back in the building I went to the manager’s apartment and rang the bell. A pleasant-faced man opened the door.

“I’m Milo March,” I told him. “I’m a friend of Jed Moore’s and he’s letting me use his apartment while he’s gone.”

He nodded. “Yes, I know, Mr. March. Mr. Moore told me you’d be here. What can I do for you?”

“I am also an insurance investigator. Although I’m supposed to be on vacation, my company has some interest in the incident of the other night and has asked me to look into it.”

He looked stricken. “I’m afraid I can’t help you much, Mr. March. He moved in about eight months ago. His references were quite good and I rented him the apartment without knowing who he was. I’m afraid that the owner is very distressed about the whole affair.”

“Well, I didn’t want to grill you,” I told him, “I’m working closely with the police and they said it would be all right if I looked through the apartment. You may check with Lieutenant Cooper if you like.”

“I guess it’ll be all right,” he said. “Mr. Moore is one of our best tenants and he spoke very highly of you. The sooner this whole thing is over, the better it’ll be for us. I’ll let you in.”

I followed him upstairs and he unlocked the door of the Renaldi apartment. “Just lock the door when you’re finished, will you, Mr. March?”

I assured him I would, and he hurried back downstairs. I guess he didn’t want to look into the place again. When I went in, I didn’t blame him too much. There was a huge stain of dried blood on the wall-to-wall carpeting, and the rest of the apartment was in disarray. The police had probably tried to put everything back in order, but no one could ever accuse them of being tidy housekeepers.

I started in the bedroom.
